About the show

A dazzling exploration of the beauty, power, and intricate patterns of Winter. Fully immerse the audience in a frozen world, with fractured silences, suspended soundscapes, and dramatic crescendos. Featuring "The Hanging Tree" from The Hunger Games, "A Time of Quiet Between the Storms" from the Dune soundtrack, and original music by Alex Yoder.

  • Breaking the Ice - "The Hanging Tree" sets a dark tone for a fast paced opener that feels like cracks spreading across a frozen surface. Icy sound fx, sharp ensemble impacts, and a focused woodwind feature with muted trumpet accompaniment provides ample variety.
  • Suspended - the ballad centers on "A Time of Quiet Between the Storms" from the Dune soundtrack and treats winter as a moment where everything is held in place, if only for a moment. A flugelhorn and alto flute duet floats over light, transparent textures, gradually growing into a broad, powerful arrival.
  • After the Thaw - the closer begins with a dark, regal fanfare that slowly opens up as warmth returns to the field. Motives from earlier in the show reappear with brighter harmony while the ensemble drives toward a final statement that feels like sunlight catching on melting ice and revealing the color and detail inside the frostwork.

Alternate themes: Frozen, Ice Queen, Winter Solstice

Originally commissioned by the Carroll High School Band - Doug Hassell, director.
