About the show

This show uses the folk tune "The Water is Wide" to tell the whimsical story of a fishing boat crew. Cast off in the early morning, capture the excitement of the catch, and return to a harbor alive with color and sound as the day's work turns into a celebration.

  • Cast Off - soloists introduce "The Water is Wide" over gentle rolling textures, like voices drifting across a quiet dock. The music swells into an energetic nautical setting that sends the crew out to sea.
  • The Wide Water - a longing, more introspective version of "The Water is Wide" becomes the heart of the production. A featured soloist carries the melody while transparent scoring and flowing front ensemble patterns give way to a beautiful full ensemble arrival.
  • The Catch - the closer bursts into motion as the nets grow heavy and the boat comes to life. Fragments of the folk tune return in a more confident, upbeat setting as the crew returns to a harbor that feels joyful and celebratory.

Originally commissioned by the Concordia High School Band. Jennifer Porath, director..
